Bare skin on soil changes the body's electrical voltage within minutes. Small human studies have since picked up changes in sleep, exercise recovery, blood and the nervous system.

Clint Ober spent years in cable television, where grounding was ordinary maintenance. A cable system needed a clean connection to the Earth or the picture picked up noise. In the late 1990s, he began to wonder what happened when a human body spent most of its life insulated from the ground.

He bought a voltmeter, connected a piece of conductive material to the Earth and made a rough grid for his bed. Ober said he slept through the night for the first time in years. A better night in one bed proved very little, so he went looking for researchers who could measure what was happening.

Researchers went on to look at sleep, blood, recovery and the nervous system.

The connection beneath your feet

The Earth's surface carries a natural charge, with a faint current moving between the ground and the atmosphere. Arthur Firstenberg puts it neatly in The Invisible Rainbow: “In this electromagnetic environment we evolved.”

When you ground, you give your body a conductive path to the Earth. Bare skin on damp grass, soil, stone or sand can make that connection. Indoors, you can use a conductive sheet or similar product. And if you want to see measurements, use a voltmeter for live data on your electrical charge.

Researchers in a Pennsylvania neonatal unit measured the electrical voltage on the skin of 26 premature babies. The incubators and other medical equipment produced the electrical field around them. The researchers connected each baby to the hospital's dedicated ground through a small skin patch.

Skin voltage fell by more than 95%. In the 20 babies with complete nervous-system readings, vagal tone rose by 67% while they were grounded. Vagal tone is linked with the body's ability to settle, digest and recover. Once the connection was removed, the reading moved back towards its earlier level.

The change took minutes.

What happened overnight

Sleep is where the evidence becomes interesting and untidy. In 2025, researchers gave 60 adults either a working grounding mat or an identical inactive mat. Neither the participants nor the researchers knew who had which one. The final analysis included 56 people who used their mat for at least 6 hours a day over 31 days.

The grounded group slept longer according to the wrist monitors. The questionnaires were muddier: both groups reported better sleep quality, less daytime sleepiness and lower stress, with no clear difference between them. Only the extra sleep showed up clearly against the inactive mat.

In another pilot study, 12 people slept grounded for 8 weeks. Researchers took saliva samples every 4 hours to trace cortisol across the day. Participants' night-time cortisol fell and the overall pattern moved closer to the natural 24-hour circadian rhythm. Most participants also reported better sleep and less pain and stress. The study was tiny and had no inactive-mat group, so its result needs a proper trial, though.

Then came the downhill run

At the University of Salzburg, 22 healthy adults ran downhill hard enough to leave their muscles sore for days. For the next 10 nights, 12 slept on grounded sheets and 10 slept on identical sham sheets. Nobody taking part, running the tests or analysing the data knew who had which sheet.

After hard exercise, an enzyme called creatine kinase rises in the blood. It rose by 310% in the grounded group and 760% in the group using inactive sheets. The grounded sleepers also kept more of their jumping ability and leg strength as they recovered.

Another randomised trial followed 16 massage therapists while they worked and slept grounded. During the grounded phase, they reported having more energy and better physical function, alongside less fatigue and pain. Similarly, a 2013 experiment showed that the red blood cells of 10 adults clumped together less after 2 hours of grounding. The negative charge acquired during grounding essentially helps the cells stay separate as they flow. These papers on grounding point to a common trend: the benefits appear measurable. However, to satisfy sceptics, larger independent trials, conducted without funding or involvement from grounding product companies, are still needed.

Start with the ground

Bare feet on damp grass, soil, stone or sand are enough. Seawater works beautifully too. Choose open land when you can, away from dense wiring, buried electrical services and rail systems. Power systems and urban railways can send stray currents through nearby soil. A city park still counts.

There is no agreed daily dose. Try 20 minutes a day for a week and see whether you notice anything in your sleep or recovery.

Bringing it indoors

Grounding sheets allow longer contact while you sleep or work. However, plugging into a wall socket connects you directly to your home’s active electrical grid, which often carries stray voltage and noise. Unless your wiring is tested and meticulously maintained by a professional, you are tethering yourself to an energised system rather than nature. I hate to bear bad news, but I am of the opinion that indoor grounding products connected to the socket are mostly a marketing gimmick.

For indoor use, I prefer a specialised sheet wired directly to its own outdoor ground rod. That stake gives you a clean, dedicated link to the soil rather than your home's electrical system. Just make sure to use the included safety resistor, follow the setup instructions, and keep the stake clear of buried utility lines.

That said, you can skip the equipment entirely: leave your shoes by the door and spend 20 minutes barefoot outside first.

What is grounding?

Grounding, also called earthing, is direct electrical contact between the body and the Earth. Bare skin on suitable ground does it outdoors, while conductive sheets and mats can provide the connection indoors.

What are the benefits of grounding?

Small human studies have measured changes in sleep time, cortisol rhythm, vagal tone, muscle recovery and red-blood-cell behaviour. Participants have also reported changes in pain, stress and energy. These findings come from small studies and still need independent confirmation.

How long should you ground each day?

Research has not established a daily dose. Start with 20 minutes a day for 7 days because that is easy to repeat. Studies have measured electrical changes within minutes, red-blood-cell changes after 2 hours, and sleep or recovery after repeated overnight use.

Which outdoor surfaces work for grounding?

Damp grass, soil, sand, unsealed natural stone and seawater can make the connection when bare skin touches them. Rubber soles, plastic, sealed flooring and dry wood block it.

Do socks count as grounding?

Bare skin gives the most reliable contact. Natural-fibre socks may conduct when damp, while dry socks add resistance and make the connection less dependable.

Can grounding help sleep?

In a 2025 double-blind study, adults used working or inactive grounding mats for 31 days. Wrist monitors found longer sleep in the group with working mats. Reported sleep quality improved in both groups, with no clear difference between them. An earlier 8-week pilot study recorded lower night-time cortisol and a rhythm closer to the expected daily pattern.

Can grounding help exercise recovery?

In a triple-blind University of Salzburg study, grounded sleepers had a smaller rise in creatine kinase and lost less leg strength and jumping ability after intensive downhill running. The trial included 22 people, so larger studies are still needed.

Is walking barefoot the same as using a grounding mat?

Both can connect your body electrically to the Earth, as long as the surface and setup conduct properly. Barefoot time also gives you daylight, fresh air and movement. A mat helps when weather, mobility or daily life makes outdoor contact difficult.
